Kirk Session with Bishops

This is St Andrew’s Church – part of the Diocese of Kolkata and the Church of North India. This is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity so it is worth noting the ecumenical nature of the CNI. Anglicans and Presbyterians are among the six denominations which came together to form the Church of North India,

As you can see, St Andrews is firmly Presbyterian in character and Scottish in identity. But it is part of the diocese and gathers around the bishop …

  1. Thank you for the pictures of Kolkata. An amazing, vibrant and welcoming place. I was especially interested in the ones of Saint Andrew’s Church, which used to be (in the days before the united Church of North India) the Church of Scotland congregation in Calcutta, and was the church where my parents and grandparents were members. My great-grandfather, however, had connections with the Free Church of Scotland in Mumbai (Bombay as it was then known). He went to India as manager of the Bombay Education Society’s Press and later became owner of the “Bombay Gazette” and subsequently of “The Times of India”. Thank you for the modern partnership between St Andrews and Kolkata dioceses, which further strengthen the links between Scotland and India.
